Freshman Families
Attention Freshmen Families

The 2013-14 school year is well under way and we hope it has been a smooth transition for your 9th grader. Through the 9th Grade Orientation, you were introduced to the Link Crew Senior Leadership and Freshman Transition Program. The goal of Link Crew is to help freshmen succeed academically and socially, using seniors as Link Crew Leaders. These Leaders were chosen through an interview process. They have been trained in confidentiality and to be effective mentors and motivators to help guide the freshmen in their Link Crews to success in high school.

Throughout the school year, these Link Crew Leaders continue to get trained in communication, organization and leadership skills so that they can maintain their positive impact on freshmen through "Follow Ups."

Social Follow Ups provide a social setting for Link Leaders and their freshmen to reconnect and build relationships outside the classroom. During the year, Link Leaders will offer freshmen supervised social events that may include activities like tailgating at sporting events or eating lunch together.

With Academic Follow Ups, Link Leaders visit freshman classes throughout the year, teaching structured lessons on topics such as Using Your Available Resources, Managing Your Time, and Achieving Excellence. Beyond these structured lessons, Link Leaders will also make individual contact and support their freshmen when teachers or parents request Follow Ups. This may be requested for students who are struggling with grades, attendance or social skills. The power of the Academic Follow Ups is that younger students learn from older students who have had a variety of experiences, successes and challenges.

If you DO NOT give permission for your child to participate in these individual, academic Follow Ups, please sign, date and return this form to Jennifer Butcher (GEAR UP Academic Specialist) at PCHS by Monday, September 16, 2013. You may also call Mrs. Butcher or Lillian Norris (Counselor) if you have questions regarding the Link Crew Program.

Thank you for your continued support of your child, PCHS, and the Link Crew Program!

5,000 Eighth Graders Begin Their Journey to College with Pep Rally and Concert
Eighth grade students from across southeastern Kentucky will gather at the Corbin Arena on Wednesday, August 29 for a two-hour college readiness kick-off.  Members of the Class of 2017 will hear from college presidents, watch performances from Chad Warrix and the Hall Pass Tour, and meet the other students participating in two national GEAR UP grant programs awarded to Berea College. This event is a partnership between Berea College, College For Every Student and the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame and Museum, which sponsors the Stars Over Appalachia program.

WHO: Performers include Chad Warrix (www.chadwarrix.com) and the Hall Pass Tour (www.hallpasstour.com). Speakers include Berea College president Dr. Lyle Roelofs and Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice Commissioner Hasan Davis.

School districts served by Berea College GEAR UP grants include Berea Community, Bell, Breathitt, Clay, Estill, Garrard, Jackson, Jackson Independent, Knott, Knox, Lee, Leslie, Laurel, Madison, Owsley, Perry, Powell, Pulaski and Rockcastle County.

WHAT: A two hour pep-rally, concert and kick-off event for eighth grade students participating in the GEAR UP program. For an overview of the GEAR UP Appalachia! and GEAR UP Promise Neighborhood grants, visit www.berea.edu/esp/programs.asp.

WHEN: August, 29 from 10 a.m. – noon.

WHERE: The Corbin Arena (www.corbinarena.com) For security reasons, this event is closed to the public. Please make contact prior to the event for media access.

WHY: Research shows that peer groups are an influential part of students’ decision-making process about higher education. This event is the first of a series of events and programs that emphasize the importance of higher education and career planning for GEAR UP students.

In Kentucky in 2010-11, only 78 percent of students graduated high school, and only 56 percent of those who did went on to college. If we don’t intervene, then at these rates, 1,100 of the 5,000 GEAR UP students won’t graduate from high school.  Of the remaining 3,900 students, 1,716 will miss out on college.  We want each of these 5,000 eighth graders to have success in postsecondary education and beyond.

Reminder:
All TCA hours are due by Thursday, August 23, 2012. Our TCA trip is scheduled for Friday, August 31st. Remember your goal is to have 10 hours completed. If you are having trouble, come and see me in the library. I am there every morning from 7:45-8:20 for TCA assistance.
